The Calmm: Acupressure to ground and balance

Jessie Whittaker from Sydney's The Calmm shares with you three acupressure points. Weave these in to your day to support oscillating emotions and excessive thoughts during times of uncertainty. Each point has been carefully selected with the intention to ground and balance.

Jessie, founder and director of The CALMM, is a registered massage therapist and passionate about healing through intuitive touch. Jessie uses acupressure on specific meridians in the body to stimulate the healing journey and focus on key energy points and enable deep relaxation. 

Acupressure is a gentle, yet extremely powerful form of bodywork. It stems from the ancient art of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), built on a foundation of prevention. It works with the energy systems of the body. By creating flow and harmony at the energy level, acupressure also brings deep relaxation and healing to our body, our emotions and spirit.

Kidney 1 (K1)

To locate K1 make a “fist” with your foot – scrunch your toes in and K1 is found about one third of the way down the sole of foot in the depression made when you scrunch your toes. To activate this point, hold K1 with your thumb or fingertips.

K1 is the first point of the Kidney Meridian, the entry point for Qi or the vital energy. This point has a downward pull and therefore by stimulating this point, we assist in draining excess energy from the upper the body, especially the head and mind, helping you feel grounded. Excess energy in the upper body can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, headaches, insomnia and panic attacks, fainting feelings and fatigue. K1’s strong downward action can relieve these symptoms fast. It’s a good go to First Aid acupressure point.

This is the perfect point to calm and ground ourselves, pull us down from the constant adrenaline rush, lowers anxiety and helps us to become unstuck. For those who suffer from insomnia, this point is your new ‘go to’. Simulate point bilaterally for 2-3 minutes each.

Large Intestine 4. LI 4

The location of LI 4 lays in the web between the index finger and the thumb, closer to the edge of your second metacarpal bone. Grip it with your opposite index and thumb. It can be quite tender, so when applying pressure, try to relax and breathe into it.

This point is known as the great eliminator for things such as toxic thought, constipation, bitterness or resentment, it soothes the mind and is great for general pain relief. Along with the emotional releases, it may assist in relaxing jaw tension and other head related tension like migraines, tension headaches, nasal congestion, earache or a sore throat.

I invite you to spend some time sitting with this point. By doing so you will be holding hands with yourself, in a quiet, contemplative pose, right here, in the present moment. This point is contraindicated during pregnancy. Simulate point bilaterally for 2-3 minutes each.

Liver 3. L3

L3 is located on your foot about two finger widths above the webbing of your big toe and the next toe. This point can be tender, apply firm but gentle pressure while breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth.

An extremely power point, L3 is known as the great rushing and is used to prevent Qi stagnation, calming emotions of anger, frustration and irritability while restoring harmony and clarity. A great point for reducing anxiety, this point assists in descending energy much like K1 does, helping to ground you when your energy is ‘stuck’ in your upper body. Physically, L3 is used for lower back pain, insomnia, shortness of breath, headaches, menstrual cramps and more.

Think of L3 as a 'central station' on a trainline. A highly energetically concentrated point, where internal and external energies gather and transform.
